The Eye over Ship Rock
If you have ever been to the SW tip of Colorado or NW New Mexico, Ship Rock is hard to miss. Seeing it for the first time last year on a trip to Mesa Verde, I knew I had to visit before too long. Even from a distance, the formation standing alone on a hazy horizon, the feeling of Mordor immediately came to mind. Seeing the twin spires, and knowing the path of the 2023 Eclipse would pass right over, this vision of the eclipse between the spires immediately stuck in my mind. While this is a composite image not representing the real path of the Sun, this image to me evokes the feeling of the eclipse. Capturing that feeling has been an obsession for the past 6 months, and this image to me represents the feeling of the eclipse better than any other.
This image required significant planning, including a scouting trip to New Mexico, getting a flat tire in the middle of the Bad Lands, photographing Ship Rock at sunset a week before the eclipse, and finally backpacking in the camera and equipment on the morning of the eclipse to capture the progression and the full annular from the north side of Ship Rock (the actual photo progression can be found here).
