A wide-view smart telescope for big nebulae, the Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way

The ZWO Seestar S30 Pro is an ideal beginner astrophotography telescope for people who want real photos of deep-sky objects without the complexity of polar alignment, focusing or stacking. Set it outside, pick a target on your phone, and your first image of a nebula or galaxy starts appearing within minutes, then grows clearer as the exposure builds. Its strength is width: the 4.6° view holds the whole Andromeda Galaxy, the Pleiades or the Orion Nebula with room to spare. If you want a light, grab-and-go smart telescope that frames the big showpieces, the S30 Pro is the one for you.

Key specs: 30mm f/5.3 four-element APO with ED glass · 4K Sony IMX585 1/1.2" telephoto camera · 63° wide-angle 4K camera · 4.6° field of view · built-in dual-band light pollution filter · 6,000mAh battery (about 6 hours) · 128GB storage · 1.65kg (3.6lb)

What you can capture

  • Large nebulae: the Orion, Lagoon, North America and Rosette Nebulae. Turn on the built-in nebula filter and they show color even from a lit-up suburb.
  • Big galaxies and clusters: the Andromeda Galaxy with both companions, the Triangulum Galaxy and the Pleiades each fit in a single frame. For anything larger, the app stitches several frames into a mosaic.
  • The Milky Way and star trails: the second, wide-angle camera covers 63° of sky, enough for a landscape shot with the Milky Way overhead.
  • The Moon and the Sun: whole-disk lunar photos, eclipses, and sunspots with the included solar filter in place.
  • Daytime subjects: at 160mm it works as a long telephoto lens for wildlife, distant mountains and launches, in photo, video or time-lapse.

Seestar S30 Pro four imaging modes: stargazing, Milky Way, solar system and scenery

Why it's so easy to use

Everything a traditional imaging setup spreads across a mount, camera, laptop and cables is built into one 1.65kg (3.6lb) unit. The app calibrates and aligns it, points it at the target, focuses, and stacks the exposures for you, so an image builds up on your phone and keeps improving.

A few things make it hold up on real nights: the nebula filter is a single tap in the app, a small heater keeps dew off the front lens, and the four-element ED glass lens keeps stars round all the way to the edges.

When you want more, you can queue several targets to run overnight, add an EQ wedge for longer exposures (see below), or control it from astronomy software like N.I.N.A.

Using the S30 Pro in Colorado

  • Light pollution along the Front Range: from Denver and its suburbs, the built-in nebula filter does the heavy lifting on emission nebulae. Galaxies and star clusters don't benefit from it, so save those for a darker site.
  • Dark skies within a drive: Colorado has more than 20 certified International Dark Sky Places. Jackson Lake State Park (about 1.5 hours northeast of Denver), Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument (about 2 hours southwest) and Westcliffe and Silver Cliff are all good targets for a night out. The S30 Pro and its tabletop tripod fit easily in a daypack.
  • Cold mountain nights: ZWO rates the S30 Pro down to 14°F (-10°C), and mountain sites drop below that in winter. Keep it in a warm car between sessions, and bring a USB-C power bank, since batteries run down faster in the cold.
  • Wind: open sites on the plains and in the mountains can be gusty. Set up low on the tabletop tripod or behind a windbreak to keep stars sharp.

Seestar S30 Pro FAQ

Is the Seestar S30 Pro good for beginners?

Yes. It's one of the easiest ways to start astrophotography: the app handles alignment, finding targets, tracking and image processing. As your skills grow, Plan mode, Equatorial Mode and ASCOM Alpaca support give you more control.

Can I see Saturn and Jupiter?

Yes, but small. At 160mm focal length the planets appear as small disks, and Saturn's rings are visible. The S30 Pro shines on large targets: nebulae, big galaxies, the Moon and the Milky Way. For planets, a longer-focal-length telescope does much better.

Seestar S30 Pro or S50 Pro?

The S30 Pro has a wider field of view, weighs less and costs less, making it the better choice for large nebulae, the Milky Way and travel. The S50 Pro's 50mm aperture gathers nearly 3× more light, so it shows smaller, fainter galaxies in more detail.

Do I need a tripod?

No. A tabletop tripod is included. For a more comfortable height or for Equatorial Mode, add a full-height tripod such as the Seestar TC20 or the Fluid Head with Tripod bundle. Any tripod with a standard 3/8"-16 thread works.

What do I need for Equatorial Mode?

Equatorial Mode tilts the scope to match Earth's axis, allowing longer exposures without field rotation. It needs the Seestar TH10 wedge on a full-height tripod. The Fluid Head with Tripod bundle includes everything.

Does it work under city light pollution?

Yes, especially for emission nebulae like the Orion, Lagoon and North America Nebulae, where the built-in dual-band filter cuts through light pollution. Galaxies and star clusters look best from darker skies, but the S30 Pro still captures bright galaxies like Andromeda from the suburbs.

Can I look through it with an eyepiece?

No. Like all smart telescopes, it's camera-based. You view and save images on your phone or tablet.

How long does the battery last?

About 6 hours of stargazing with tracking (ZWO's lab figure). It charges over USB-C.

Can I photograph the Sun?

Yes, with the included magnetic solar filter attached. Never point the S30 Pro at the Sun without the solar filter in place.
